Choosing the right supplies can make a noticeable difference in both the process and the final result. In this article, we’ll explore the fundamental essentials necessary for successful hand embroidery.
Basic essential supplies for hand embroidery - A comprehensive guide for you
Fabric / Material Starting an embroidery project begins with choosing the right fabric. The material you select affects how your stitches sit, how durable the piece will be, and the overall look of your design. Here I will explain some common fabric options for you.
The most common fabrics used in embroidery are cotton and linen blends. When selecting fabric, it’s important to choose a high-quality fabric that’s easy to work with and won’t fray too much. I personally prefer using Greige cloth(commonly known as raw cotton/ grey cloth) and Linen blends. You can also do embroidery in Denim or Knitted materials too.
Below is a tutorial on how I did embroidery on Denim Jeans :)
https://youtu.be/DV96BqbM5U0?si=HWs6aRbc7m4HspBI
Important tip: If you plan to wash your embroidered piece after finishing, make sure to wash and dry the fabric before you start stitching. Iron it also with law heat if possible. This might seem like an extra step, but it prevents unexpected shrinking of the fabric later on. This shrinking would misalign your beautiful stitches. So please wash the fabric beforehand. Trust me, you’ll be glad you did!
Remember, the fabric you choose plays a big role in how your embroidery turns out. Whether you’re creating delicate florals or bold geometric designs, think of your fabric as the foundation that supports your entire piece.
Embroidery Hoops You’ll need to choose a hoop that’s the right size for your project, with a diameter slightly larger than the size of the design you’re stitching. I normally use plastic hoops to do my embroidery and then I use rubber/wooden hoops to display them.
Embroidery hoops ensure that your fabric remains taut and your stitches precise. You can find hoops with a variety of sizes and materials, but the most common are wooden embroidery hoops.
My experience so far - I find plastic hoops keep the fabric stable much when comparing with rubber/wooden hoops.
For a beginner, I would recommend using a 6 inch round hoop as I find this size is very comfortable to handle. You can check below video for “How to adjust the fabric in embroidery hoops”
https://youtu.be/CleY1JQBjmE?si=6jMbQ03BAewBT2_V
Tutorial - How to fix fabric in embroidery hoops
Embroidery Floss Embroidery floss is the colorful thread used in hand embroidery. It’s typically made of six strands that can be separated or used all together, depending on the thickness you want for your embroidery.
There are many different brands of embroidery floss available in the market. DMC and Anchor are the common brands available and I can recommend them for their amazing quality. They come in hundreds of colors and is widely available at local stores and online.
Embroidery Needles Embroidery needles are specially designed with a sharp tip to pass easily through fabric and a larger eye to hold embroidery floss without fraying it. You can accommodate various sizes of embroidery needles for your projects based on the number of thread strands and the fabric you are using.
Here in the below video at 2:27, I have shown a table for the recommended sizes of DMC embroidery needles. I normally use DMC #3 embroidery needle with 6 strands of embroidery floss.
https://youtu.be/xPpT7UCNs2o?t=149
Embroidery Scissors A good pair of scissors is an essential tool for any embroiderer. You’ll need a pair of sharp, pointed scissors for cutting embroidery floss and you will also need a pair of sewing scissors to cut your fabric.
Transfer Supplies - How to transfer the pattern onto the fabric? If you’re using a pattern for your embroidery, you’ll need to transfer it onto your fabric. There are many different transfer supplies available.
If you draw the pattern directly onto the fabric, you can use a pencil, carbon pen, heat/water erasable pen or dressmakers’ chalk.
Below is how I used my window as a light box and a pencil to copy a pattern onto the fabric.
https://youtu.be/GbaphC-Copc?si=OqpJDUUhJwbGhcyo
Important Tip - Use the carbon pen if an only if the lines of the patterns are covered by your embroidery. If not your pen marks will be visible in the completed piece. The lines made by rest of the supplies can be easily washed by soap water. But again, use them if and only if you are planning to wash your project once finished.
My experience so far - I find heat erasable pens to be the easiest. They literally saved me !! All I have to do is ironing my finished project with a very low heat. And Vola ! the remaining pen lines will be gone. Simple and easy !
In conclusion, hand embroidery is a beautiful and rewarding craft that requires a few essential supplies to start with. With a set of embroidery needles, embroidery floss, embroidery hoops, fabric, scissors and transfer supplies, you’ll be ready to create beautiful embroidery designs that you’ll be proud to display. So I hope this article helped you get a good understanding on " fundamental essentials necessary for successful hand embroidery" and you are all set to start your embroidery journey. Lock them properly when the fabric is taut enough and you are all set for stitching !!!
Stitching the leaves Close up of green leaves being stitched with centered satin stitch on linen fabric for a heart-shaped design.
I used a centered satin stitch filling for the leaves. I felt that satin stitch is ideal to stitch these chubby leaves with a belly.
Stitching the border lines of the heart Hand embroidery heart outline being created using a simple running stitch with red thread.
The border lines of the heart were easily completed with running stitch. If you like you can use back stitch, back split stitch or stem stitch for this. But I really loved the simple look the running stitch gave out.
Stitching the roses I always love stitching roses using various stitches. This time I used stem stitch to fill in my roses. I really love the final texture in them.
Detail of a rose flower being embroidered using the stem stitch technique to create a textured floral design.
Here are a few tips for stitching the stem stitch rose: Do not pull the thread too tight. Always be gentle when pulling the thread.
Increase the stem stitch size as you stitch the rose. You can refer the tutorial video for more details.
Detail of a rose flower being embroidered using the stem stitch technique to create a textured floral design.
Stitching the letters aka monogramming For the monogramming I initially tried Stem stitch. But I was not that happy about the outcome. So I did a quick un-picking. You know a lot of unpicking is very common in behind the scenes of a project. And then I restarted stitching with back stitch. And Wow !! Those tiny back stitches gave the exact texture I wanted for the word LOVE !!
Close up of the word ‘LOVE’ being monogrammed in hand embroidery using tiny red back stitches.
I hope that this will be a great gift idea for your loved one. You wonder how? don’t worry. You will learn how after following my tutorial.
It has been a while that I posted something here. I know it seems like that I had forgotten my website. Sincerely it was not. Updating the site was always in my mind but unfortunately I was very busy with some personal stuff. Ok. enough talking about myself. Let’s get into the business.
It was one fine Saturday afternoon and it was heavily raining. So I decided that it was the ideal time to start stitching these Roses design. (If you are following me in YouTube for a while you know that my first tutorial is about this same stitch)
So I sat by my kitchen door with my supplies and sketched the pattern onto my fabric. Then I started stitching these stem stitch roses while watching the rain. It was so relaxing to hear the sound of the rain and the sound of the needle. That was the peaceful feeling I needed after some very busy and hectic days.
Stitching the stem First I started stitching the stems. I used Back Split stitch with 6 strands of cotton embroidery thread.
Back split stitch is one of the common stitches I use when I want to stitch stems with some width.
NOTE - Please note that I used 6 strands of cotton embroidery floss for this entire design.
Stitching the Leaves For the leaves I experimented something new!! First I stitched a lazy daisy stitch and then I stitched two straight stitches over lazy daisy stitch.
If you like you can keep the lazy Daisy stitch only. But I personally don’t like the white area in the middle of a lazy daisy stitch. That is why I covered it up with two straight stitches.
Stitching the rose bud When stitching the rose bud, I simply filled it in using a Satin stitch application. You can check the tutorial video for clear instructions for how I did it. Satin stitch can do miracles when it comes to filling empty spaces !! I know you all will agree with that statement!!
For the bottom part of the bud, I used some random straight stitches with green thread. Those stitches do not follow any proper direction!! Yes That is how they are in the nature !!
Hand Embroidery roses with stem stitch - Let’s stitch the roses now !! Finally the ROSES !!! First I filled in the heart of the flower with some French knots. I used two turns of thread for these knots. French knots are my favorites when it come to fill in the middle part of the flowers. What is yours??
Then I started stitching Stem stitches around this French knotted center. It was so exciting to see how these little stem stitches form the texture of a rose. I have used this method to stitch roses for two or more projects before. There I had to play around a lot to figure out the perfect way of handling the thread.
So here are the tips you need to know when stitching roses with stem stitch:
Tip number 01 – Don’t pull the thread too tight. Don’t let the thread be very loose either. Be gentle with the thread when pulling.
Tip number 02 – Slightly increase the stitch size as you stitch.
Here is the final look of my design. What do you all think?
Isn’t it beautiful ??
This will soon be framed and gifted to one of my beloved friends from school.
Tutorial Video - Hand embroidery roses with stem stitch Free Pattern to follow along the tutorial Here is the free pattern that you can use to follow along the tutorial.
[download id=“531”]
Hope you enjoy reading about this project and don’t forget to share your thoughts/experiences in the comments section.
You can find me in Instagram , Facebook , YouTube and Pinterest.
You can follow my previous tutorials and posts from here.
Thanks for reading. Today I’m writing about a cherry blossom tree embroidery which I hand embroidered soon after I started my Facebook Page.
I do love cherry blossoms. Yeah I know you all do too. I mean who doesn’t love these mind blowing pinky trees. Sometimes I wonder that I am the only one who gets a fairy tale feeling when seeing cherry blossom trees. How do you feel upon seeing a cherry blossom tree?
So in this tutorial you will learn to stitch this tree with just two basic stitches. Yeah I repeat I have only used two different stitches. All I want to say is you don’t have to know a lot of stitches in order to complete a beautiful hand embroidery project. You should never be afraid of not knowing the whole lot of the stitches out there. What you should do is get your supplies ready and stab your fabric applying the stitches you already know. Enough talking and let’s get back to the business.
